I have published gpsVP on Google Code. If you like the program you can participate in the project. Even and especially you are not a developer you can help write wiki about gpsVP and discuss new features and old problems.

Let’s say the truth. I am not working on gpsVP and not going to do it in the nearest future. Now I focus on working for Yandex, searching maps, contributing to OpenStreetMap, gathering tracks (in Russian) and making news/content project about my home town Uglich (in Russian). I am looking for an enthusiast who will make gpsVP opensource. And I think I’ll contribute to gpsVP sometimes

Well, it’s difficult to describe briefly what I have done. It’s much easier to visit GarminMapSearch site and select “OSM” map type. Yes, now you can use OpenStreetMap.org maps instead of Google if you area is covered with them better.

Although last two months I had very few spare time, my visitors did a great job. Now GarminMapSearch is available in four more languages: Slovak, Norwegian, Italian and Romanian. Welcome!
UP: Also from now you see the maps in language you have chosen.

Time goes on and there are much more proposed features than implemented. Last month I’ve spent very few time working on gpsVP. Maybe you want to do something in gpsVP for yourself? I’m ready to share sources with certain number of developers.

From the very beginning all the sites were added to my Garmin map search index manually. Some sites I’ve found myself, some were introduced by my guests. Of course all the major site were indexed but many small ones were left aside. Each of them contains few maps but usually they are the best maps of some area. Recently I’ve implemented new site discovery algorithm in my robot and it worked! Now you search 166 sites instead of about 70 and the number is constantly growing. Keep watching!

I think that everyone has noticed that Google maps don’t work again in gpsVP. In fact that was not an error, just some curious incompatibility, although I realize that it doesn’t matter for you. Please update gpsVP to 0.4.14 to get Google maps back. I’ve also fixed some minor problems and added an option to disable internet connection.
Download page.

Actually, this Christmas gift for you isn’t from me. It’s from Google. On GarminMapSearch site I use Google maps API to let you choose a place. Now in the lower left corner of the map you can find a search box. Use it to find a place and then click the map to find downloadable Garmin maps. I also keep working on the site. I’ve changed the way maps are sorted. Now I try to show most detailed maps first and remove duplicates. Also lately I’ve added some new sources to index. If you know some that are not indexed please let me know.

Some authors distribute their custom maps for Garmin navigators in installers (executable files) which help you to fit a map into MapSource. My map search robot found many such executables but up to the moment it could not look into them to get map information. Now I’ve added support for some type of installers and many great maps instantly appeared in the index. You can see it yourself.

My Garmin map search and Russa maps have got an update. This time the update is minor. I’ve only indexed five new sites and updated existing. I’ve also fixed the problem that made the site unusable for Internet Explorer 6.0 users (maybe this should be considered major since about 30% of my visitors use the browser).
